Assistant Teaching Professor in Biological Sciences
University of California, San Diego
Position Title: Assistant Teaching Professor in Biological Sciences
Description: The School of Biological Sciences (https://biology.ucsd.edu/), Department of Cell and Developmental Biology, invites applications for a faculty position in Biology Education for a security of employment-track (tenure equivalent) position at the Assistant Teaching Professor (also referred to as Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment or LPSOE) level. Candidates must be committed to equity and inclusion in undergraduate and graduate education. We seek candidates to advance science education at UC San Diego and beyond through research (also referred to as scholarly and creative activities), including but not limited to learning sciences, discipline-based education research, scholarship of teaching and learning, curriculum and assessment, and educational outreach. While we are particularly interested in candidates who will pursue scholarly and creative activities using novel theoretical and/or methodological frameworks to examine learning in formal and/or informal settings in relation to social justice, curriculum decolonization, critical theories, and/or institutional change, candidates with other areas of expertise in scholarly and creative activities will also receive full consideration. The incumbent should possess disciplinary expertise in one or more areas of biological or life sciences. We are particularly interested in candidates with the ability to teach and design courses in quantitative biology, physiology/pathophysiology, and biochemistry. The ideal candidate would be able to teach in all three of these areas and could develop curricula to improve student success as students transition from chemistry to biochemistry. Depending on expertise, the incumbent will join educational leadership team(s) for one or more of our core laboratory and lecture courses in these disciplinary areas, contributing to ongoing course development and instruction that serve students from many different communities and intersections of identities. Experience in mentoring and/or service within an institution, professional organization, and/or community will also be considered as strengths in potential candidates.
