38th Annual ABLE Meeting
University of Houston
June 21-24, 2016
The University of Houston Department of Biology and Biochemistry is delighted to host the 2016 ABLE conference. We look forward to hosting the major workshops in our new Science Teaching Laboratory Building, providing housing in our new Cougar Village residence halls, and sharing with you all the wonderful places to explore in the Houston area. We hope you will join us on the Gulf Coast for another year of sharing ideas, developing collaborations, and striving to provide top notch laboratory education to students around the world.
The 38th annual conference of the Association for Biology Laboratory Education will be held at the University of Houston in Houston, Texas from June 21-24, 2016. Houston is located on the banks of the Buffalo Bayou, hence the nickname “Bayou City”. It is the fourth most populous city in the United States with over 2.1 million residents and a total of 5.95 million in the metropolitan area. Houston is home to over 11,000 restaurants featuring everything from local specialties to international favorites. Houston boasts the second largest theater district in the country, surpassed only by New York City. You can enjoy world-class performances by the Houston Grand Opera, Houston Symphony, Theater under the Stars, and many of our fine local performing groups. The museum district is home to the Hermann Park, the Houston Zoo, the Museum of Natural History, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Health Museum, the Contemporary Arts Museum, the Holocaust Museum, the Menil Collection, and the Children’s Museum (a must see if you are bringing kids). The Texas Medical Center, the largest medical center in the world, is located in Houston. Energy and aeronautics are among the industries with a strong presence here. The Port of Houston is the 10th largest in the world and handles more waterborne tonnage than any of the port in the US. The University of Houston, founded in 1927, is a Carnegie-Tier One research institution. With a student body of over 40,000, we offer over 300 undergraduate and graduate programs and award over 8,000 degrees a year. Our student body is the second most ethnically diverse population in the nation (U.S. News & World Report, 2010). PBS, the Public Broadcasting System, was brought to you by the University of Houston in 1953. Our 667-acre campus features fountains, sculptures, shade trees, a community garden, and a small pond along with state-of-the art facilities for research and teaching.
