University of Maryland – College Park, June 25-29, 2024
The Biological Sciences Program is proud to host the Association for Biology Laboratory Education 45th Annual Meeting. We look forward to welcoming participants to the University of Maryland from June 25-29, 2024. The University of Maryland was founded in 1856 and is Maryland’s land grant university. The 1,340 acre campus is located in College Park, Maryland, just outside of Washington, D.C., on ancestral land of the Piscataway tribe. We are home to over 40,000 students and 14,000 faculty and staff.
The Biological Sciences Program coordinates the undergraduate curriculum in life sciences within the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences for three departments: Biology, Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics, and Entomology. Providing our students ample opportunities to engage in meaningful laboratory experiences is a cornerstone of undergraduate education in life sciences at the University of Maryland, and we are committed to supporting the ABLE 2024 conference with classroom, computer, and wet lab spaces located primarily in a cluster of buildings centered around Hornbake Plaza. In addition we have a 13-acre woodland area and a stream on campus suitable for outdoor workshops.
The hub of our conference will be the Biosciences Research Building/Biology-Psychology Building complex on Hornbake Plaza, which will host registration, coffee breaks, lunches, the SimBio poster session, information tables for our generous sponsors, and of course the Van-Griner Learning ice cream social. Classrooms, computer labs, and wet labs for major and mini workshops will be conveniently located in adjacent buildings including H.J. Patterson Hall.
The town of College Park, Maryland, is located 15 miles northeast of the National Mall outside Washington, D.C., affording ready access to the many museums and historical sites the nation’s capital has to offer. The Chesapeake Bay is only 30 miles to the east, making natural areas an easy day trip away. College Park is home to the historic College Park Airport, originally founded as an aircraft demonstration and training facility for Wilbur Wright in 1909 and currently the world’s oldest continuously operated airport. Notable neighbors include the USDA Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, Greenbelt National Park, and the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Our location provides diverse opportunities for Experiential Learning Opportunities (aka “excursions”), including visiting the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History and other downtown attractions, or exploring Chesapeake Bay wetlands by canoe at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center.
