Abstract

The workshop promoted the use of live, transparent, specimens of shrimp, usually a species of Paleomonetes, to examine open circulation. Even in large, preserved specimens such as crayfish students find difficulty finding the heart, let alone using these specimens to obtain an understanding of open circulation. Working with living material allows student to view hearts beating and monitor hemolymph flow into arteries. Students are more motivated working with living animals and can also use these same animals to examine other systems and behavior.
