Mount Cuba Center | Stroud Water Research Center | Campus Tour

Excursion 1 - Guided tour of Mount Cuba Center

Mount Cuba Center is a 650 acre woodland estate, located about 30 minutes from Newark, which was the former home of Mr. an Mrs. Lammot duPont Copeland. The Copelands had their woodland gardens designed by Philadelphia landscape architects. It was their mission, and continues to be the mission of Mount Cuba, to promote the cultivation and conservation of trees, shrubs, and wildflowers native to the Appalachian Piedmont region. Visiting is by appointment only and we have been able to attange a special two-hour tour. You will be guided by naturalists through woodland paths, ponds, and formal gardens of this acclaimed horticultural center in Delaware's rolling countryside.
Excursion 2 - Guided tour Stroud Water Research Center

"The Stroud Water Research Center's scientific staff is internationally acclaimed for its pioneering research on streams and rivers. ...
The Center is located about 45 minutes Northwest of Newark. It is well known for its research and educational outreach activities concerning streams and watersheds. First year honors biology students of Profs. Dion and Hodson take an excellent afternoon field trip there where they learn aout the Center's research, tour the research and education facilities, and carry out a stream quality assessment activity. On return to campus, they stop at a farm selling home-made ice cream that is highly regarded in the area. It is expected that the ABLE visit can have a similar program, weather-permitting.
Excursion 3 - Tour of UD Campus
A tradition of ABLE is to arrange a local tour that arrivals on Tuesday may attend. We have identified some sites that may be offered individually or combined, depending on timing, interest, and transportation resources.
Physical Therapy Research Area
"The Physical Therapy Department at University of Delaware has one of the highest ranked DPT programs in the country."
The Physical Therapy department is located in McKinly Laboratory three floors above where workshops will be held. Research facilities include a special force transducer and video recording apparatus used to study biomechanics of human walking and running. One or more ABLE volunteers will be hooked up to demonstrate the facility in action.
Student Multimedia Design Center
A new student multimedia design center is located in the main library. You will tour the facility and have a hands-on try at creating a podcast.
UD Botanical Gardens
The College of Agriculture has a small landscape garden. Professor Tallamy, Chair of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology, studies native versus alien plant species in their relationship with herbivores and herbivore predators. He has written a book on the subject and will give a presentation on it.
Outdoor Pool
The University has a heated, 50-meter outdor pool in the College of Agriculture area. The facility is available at an arranged, reduced cost of $3. Lap lanes are in place from 12 noon to 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., but lap swimming may be possible all afternoon this time of year.
Delaware Biotechnology Institute
The Delaware Biotechnology Institute has a research building about a mile from the University's main campus. The education outreach gives tours of the 3D imaging facility, where one can "walk" into a protein and other biological structures.
