Aging Skeletal Remains: An Investigative Lab Experience in Human Anatomy
This session will present a (an appealing) laboratory technique that can be
incorporated into a traditionally non-investigative anatomy lab course. The
featured technique employs the endochondral (sternal) end of the human rib
for age determination. This (innovative/unique) research component, typically
used to determine age of skeletal remains, enhances student learning during
lab experiences. The students, working individually or in groups, are
given this technique (or guidance in finding the necessary technique) and are
asked to determine the age during the course of the quarter/semester. This
session will include a human rib demonstration of the age-determining technique.
