Twigs and the T-test
Twigs bear various marks that provide clues. Some of these marks help
us to identify the tree, while others enable us to measure the length of twig
growth in each of the last several years. Drought during a growing season
will greatly reduce tree growth. We will examine twigs from a tree and
measure the length of twig growth in each of the past 2 years; we will pool
our data and determine whether there is a statistically significant difference
between the growth that occurred in those 2 years. To determine this,
we will review the basics of the two-sample t-test, and then perform the t-test
on the pooled data using Microsoft Excel software. Other possible versions
of this exercise will also be discussed.
